Substance Use Disorder

Take back control of your mind, body and behavior with our specialized treatment and expertise.

WHAT IS SUBSTANCE ABUSE?

Substance abuse, which differs from addiction in that it is a behavioral issue, refers to the abusive use of alcohol or drugs that are not part of any prescribed medical treatment plan in order to reach a “high” or get quick relief from stress or anxiety. What can often begin as an occasional use of alcohol or drugs can exacerbate into a substance use disorder with increasingly frequent and excessive use of mind-altering substances that have the potential to negatively affect your health as well as personal and work relationships. Without treatment, it can lead to addiction, or physical dependency on a substance, which is a chronic condition. At Welwynn, substance use disorder can be successfully treated, and reoccurrence prevented.

Drug Abuse and Addiction

What It Is & Treatment

At Welwynn, we understand the many paths to drug addiction. We also understand that this problem is seen across every strata of society and every socio-economic demographic – it does not discriminate. The proliferation of overdoses in recent years – both from prescription and illicit drugs – has created a huge outpouring of media attention on this topic. But whether through an innocent, legal prescription from a medical professional or through an occasional social encounter, drug addiction can be sparked by the most casual of circumstances.

Regardless if it’s from legal or illegal means, unintended or a planned encounter, no one sets out to become an addict. Welwynn recognizes that how you ‘got there’ is not the primary focus, but rather how quickly it is addressed and the level of treatment for which you receive.

Common Substances We Encounter:

Opiates (hydrocodone, morphine, oxycodone, hydromorphone, Kratom and fentanyl) are narcotic painkillers designed to control pain and are prescribed by doctors to treat valid medical diagnoses.

Cocaine is a powerfully addictive stimulant drug made from the leaves of the coca plant native to South America giving the user the feeling of euphoria. As a street drug, cocaine looks like a fine, white, crystal powder.

Heroin is an opioid drug that is synthesized from morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seed of the poppy plant giving the user a long, euphoric rush.

Alcohol is a psychoactive depressant substance with dependence-producing properties which releases dopamine and serotonin while also slowing down cognitive functions.

Benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax, Librium) are a type of prescription tranquilizers taken for their sedating effects to treat anxiety and insomnia.

Meth (methamphetamine) is an extremely addictive man-made central nervous system stimulant that causes tremendous feelings of energy and a euphoric high. Methamphetamine is available in a white powder and a crystal rock form.

Marijuana is a psychoactive drug from the Cannabis plant used for recreational and medical purposes. The main psychoactive ingredient, THC, releases a relaxed, euphoric feeling.

We are aware of just how difficult it is to gather the courage to seek help particularly given the stigma associated with drug addiction, fearing what life will be like without drugs and the uncertainty with leaving drugs behind and beginning to reclaim the life you left. At Welwynn, you will never be judged or looked down upon for any of these factors and your treatment will always remain confidential. We will help you understand what effects drugs have on your life, how to recognize and deal with the cravings after detox and how best to deal with the feelings that are at the root cause of your addiction.

Treatment And Recovery Options

We want to help you through your addiction with available treatment and recovery plans specific to your individual case.
THE PATH TO RECOVERY
You have done the right thing – you have opened this page to learn what can be done for opiate addiction treatment, with skilled professional clinicians that will work with you and your family/friends, if you wish, to put you on the path to recovery. Our Welwynn clinicians have worked with opiate addiction clients since the beginnings of what we now know as the opioid crisis in our country. We stand ready to help you with proven, exceptionally successful state-of-the-art treatment modalities. Our focus is on helping you on your road to sustained recovery, not on how you got to your opiate addiction.

TREATMENT AND RECOVERY
One of the most unique challenges in many clients addicted to opiates is that they do not want to lose the “normal” feeling they have when taking opiates, which they feel allows them to work through their daily lives/work, etc., as usual. They may begin to see a problem when needing higher and higher doses to reach the state of what they consider normal, and the risk of overdosing becomes very real, as do some of the side effects of these drugs, such as abdominal cramping, mood swings, sexual dysfunction, nausea, etc. Many will seek help at this stage, hopefully, and our clinicians can help stabilize and detoxify these clients according to their identified needs.

Many are fearful of the symptoms that can occur with opiate withdrawal when beginning treatment for opiate dependency, such as anxiety, clamminess and sweating, vomiting and sleep disturbances. Our time-tested clinicians are skilled in treatment options that help alleviate these symptoms, and help clients prevent relapse, while continuing with their usual work schedules and lives. The goal of any medication-assisted treatment is to have it be short-term, not a life-long need, and current pharmaceutical options are available, such as SuboxoneR and VivitrolR to help subdue the cravings associated with withdrawal. Other opiate treatment platforms exist as well, which the treatment clinicians will explain when working with you to set up your specific, individualized treatment plan.

If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of withdrawal please call 911 and for further support please call Welwynn (984) 200-2780.
BENZODIAZEPINES USAGE ABUSE
Benzodiazepines, or Benzos, as they are popularly called, are a very good remedy when used appropriately for anxiety or panic attacks. They can also be prescribed for seizures or convulsions. They should be prescribed on a temporary, as needed, basis for anxiety and panic attack issues – not for long term, daily usage. Unfortunately, these drugs are very easily found illegally, and providers don’t always prescribe them properly, or users doctor shop for additional prescriptions. It is very easy to get addicted when a user wants the mild state of euphoria and anxiety control to be constant, or the level of euphoria increased.

TREATMENT AND RECOVERY
Alcohol abuse, with the anxiety it can produce, is often seen in conjunction with benzo usage, creating additional risks and problems for treatment. For high-performing executives and professionals, who want to be on top of their game all the time, excessive usage can lead to physical and psychological dependence on benzos. Treatment begins with a history of the triggers and path that led to abuse or addiction, including what other methods the client has tried to curb anxiety and panic attacks. The expert clinicians at Welwynn will be better able to help you find your path to recovery when they know exactly what substances and usage patterns brought you to seek treatment. The needed treatment platforms will be found for your needs, with your input.

Detoxification from Benzos needs to be closely monitored for any complications, with the judicious use of medications to ease withdrawal symptoms when needed. The length of time this might take varies, depending on many factors, such as drugs used, extent of use, etc. With withdrawal management complete, other therapies will be needed to fully recover, and prevent relapse. Options may include individual counseling, group therapy, behavioral therapy and others, as determined by you and your clinicians.

If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of withdrawal please call 911 and for further support please call Welwynn (984) 200-2780.
ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY AND DANGEROUSLY ADDICTIVE DRUGS
Heroin addiction treatment takes a very highly-trained addiction clinician, who understands the rapid process with which heroin can take over your brain, and cause your behavior to be erratic, bizarre, and often violent. Detoxification may not take that long, depending on the extent of the usage and behaviors involved, but recovery can take a lot longer, as withdrawal symptoms can occur for an unknown period of time, and potentially lead to relapse.

TREATMENT AND WITHDRAWAL
Withdrawal symptoms, fueling the need for more heroin, vary in intensity, with some even becoming life-threatening. Heroin addiction treatment would be optimized if users sought help before symptoms such as sweats, nausea, vomiting, dangerously slow breathing and fever became too severe, and more and more heroin was sought to alleviate them. Medications can assist with ongoing withdrawal symptoms and help relieve the subsequent cravings for heroin, and are used in some treatment plans when needed. Suboxone and Vivitrol, for example, are FDA approved and can be used in an outpatient addiction center setting.

Extremely discreet conditions and confidentiality are a hallmark of Welwynn, as we understand your need for privacy in preventing information regarding your treatment to reach ears other than those you have allowed. It is safe to say we go beyond HIPAA and other regulatory requirements to ensure your privacy, giving our clients the comfort level needed to help in sustaining heroin addiction recovery.

PROFESSIONALS ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO COCAINE ADDICTION
Cocaine is one of the more appealing drugs to those who have high pressure professional, business or executive lines of work, as it not only gives a rush of euphoria, but also a burst in energy. This may appeal to professionals weighed down by career responsibilities and/or other family or social concerns. How people use cocaine, whether snorting, smoking or injecting, determines the length of time for its effects to take hold, as well as the duration of them. Users often are noted to be more energetic, talkative, and overconfident.

TREATMENT AND RECOVERY
Cocaine addiction treatment is usually based on symptoms, length of use and side effects from its use. The biggest physical danger of cocaine use is its effects on the heart, even potentially causing a heart attack or stroke. Treatment also has to take into effect if other co-abuse substances, such as alcohol or marijuana, are used. We find cocaine and alcohol are commonly used together. Alcohol is a frequent trigger for cocaine use thus it is imperative one must remain abstinent from both substances. For the best outcome for sustained recovery, no other drugs should be used during the recovery phase.

Welwynn gives its clients the support they need in helping define the severity of the addiction, identifying and evaluating the triggers and other medical and psychological needs fueling the addiction. Just as peer group pressure may have been a factor in cocaine addiction, it may be useful in sustaining recovery. Client-centered, individualized cocaine addiction treatment plans need to be developed with the expert clinicians at Welwynn. Ongoing recovery therapy could include cognitive behavioral therapy, in order to help clients know better how to identify and deal with the triggers that could lead to a relapse in cocaine use.

WHAT IS ALCOHOL ADDICTION & ABUSE?
Alcohol addiction is characterized as the continued use and abuse of alcohol despite the negative consequences in your life. Alcoholics consume amounts of alcohol that cause distress or harm to the individual and can decrease inhibitions to the point that the individual is placing themselves or others in danger.

Although some people who abuse alcohol do not become dependent, they often neglect their responsibilities at work, school or in other areas of their lives. Today there are a number of treatment options available to help people with alcohol addiction and co-occuring disorders that impact their lives.

Recreational and social drinking is ingrained in our culture. However, when your focus turns to drinking instead of enjoying these social gatherings or life’s simple moments, it could be the beginning of a serious drinking problem. Friends and family members who drink socially may seem judgmental when someone begins to abuse alcohol since they’ve never experienced such problems and don’t understand.

DISCREET ALCOHOL ADDICTION TREATMENT
At Welwynn, we understand how difficult it can be to make the decision to seek treatment for your alcohol problems. Often people worry about the stigma attached to the disease and what others may think or how they will be judged. We are dedicated to offering you the support you need and the help you deserve to overcome your struggles to control your alcohol use.

We understand how influences in everyday life can contribute to the hesitancy to commit to treatment for this complex problem. Our highly trained staff specializes in treating addiction including alcohol use disorders. They use a number of treatment approaches that have been empirically supported and evidenced based which attests to their effectiveness.

ALCOHOL ADDICTION RECOVERY AND RELAPSE PREVENTION
While at Welwynn you will learn new coping mechanisms for dealing with life’s stresses and relapse prevention techniques to help you maintain sobriety after your treatment. In addition, you will learn how to avoid those situations which will be stumbling blocks to your recovery, and allow you to restore relationships that existed prior to your treatment. We will even help you develop the skills to be able to attend functions that include alcohol, using new found abilities to resist urges and cravings.

When it comes to talking about marijuana, most people feel that using this substance is far from problematic. Marijuana is a natural substance that people use as a drug. While medical marijuana has been a major topic of dispute for many years, it’s clear that there are concerns on both sides of the argument. Many individuals and even professionals feel that it’s dangerous or, in the least, unhelpful. Others, however, feel that this drug improves health or, again at the very least, doesn’t hurt the user.

Regardless of where a person stands on the matter, it’s important to be aware of the statistics and data revolving around marijuana use. The whole truth of the matter of marijuana is that, yes, it’s possible to become dependent on it. Yes, it’s possible to abuse this drug and use it too much, just as it’s possible to use any other substance too much.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration states that about 1 in 10 of the people who use marijuana will develop an addiction to it. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that about 30% of those who use marijuana have at least some sort of dependence on the substance. In other words, a good portion of those who use marijuana suffer from a marijuana use disorder.

But, if you think that you or a loved one needs help for marijuana addiction, look out for these signs:

  • Increased tolerance

  • Inability to stop or limit marijuana use

  • Reduced interest in activities that the user previously enjoyed

  • Using marijuana to cope with problems and/or escape reality

  • Depending on marijuana to feel relaxed, happy, or fulfilled

  • Inability to meet personal and professional obligations that interfere with the opportunity to get “high”

HOW CAN YOU BE ADDICTED TO METH?
The stimulant effects of methamphetamine (meth) use can rapidly lead to addiction, as meth delivers a very powerful rush of dopamine to your brain, creating an increased sense of well-being and pleasure – far more so than your brain’s naturally occurring dopamine production. People who want this stimulant effect to be ongoing often use it several days in a row to stay high. As meth is more affordable than many other drugs, it often becomes the drug of choice for continued use, but it also is known to lead to the use of other drugs.

SIDE EFFECTS AND DANGERS OF METH
When meth wears off, withdrawal symptoms can also present as rapidly as the effects of meth do, and create extreme levels of discomfort with symptoms such as depression, anxiety , restlessness and insomnia. Perhaps the most serious risk of meth use is the adulteration of meth that drug dealers are increasingly doing – cutting meth with drugs such as antidepressants or opioids, increasing the potential strength of the meth. Considering that most of the meth used in our country comes in illegally, from questionable sources, it is potentially the most lethal of the street drugs.

RECOVERY AND RELAPSE PREVENTION
Carefully monitored detoxification, the first step of meth addiction treatment, will safely rid the body of meth and help make it ready for normal drug-free functioning. Counseling will be needed to help our clients recognize and avoid the triggers that would lead them back into meth use. Resisting the temptation of the rush of euphoria from meth, and learning how to maintain recovery will not happen overnight, but with help from the Welwynn expert clinicians and identified support systems, it can be done. Any meth addiction treatment plan is client-driven and comprehensive in scope, with ongoing therapy options to help prevent relapse.
